LPG vs electric heating for off-grid properties

LPG heats a whole wet central heating system through a conventional boiler and radiators. Electric heating usually means individual panel heaters, storage heaters, or an electric boiler feeding the same radiator circuit.

Things worth knowing about LPG and electric heating

  • LPG boilers work with standard radiators and existing pipework
  • Electric boilers need a suitably rated electrical supply
  • Panel heaters need no wet system but heat rooms individually
  • LPG requires outdoor bulk tank or bottle storage
  • Electric options avoid combustion, flueing and fuel deliveries

LPG and electric heating: the short technical version

An LPG boiler behaves like a mains gas boiler in every respect except its fuel source, so existing radiators, controls and cylinders carry over unchanged. Electric options range from simple panel heaters with no wet system at all, to electric boilers that plug into existing pipework where a heat pump or gas conversion is not practical. Running characteristics, response speed and required electrical supply capacity differ significantly between the two.

Our advice: LPG suits homes keeping a wet radiator system; electric suits smaller properties or those without existing pipework to reuse.

For gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer; for oil work, use an OFTEC-registered technician.

Questions we get asked

Is electric heating simpler to install?
Panel heaters are simpler; an electric boiler on an existing wet system is a comparable job to a gas conversion.
Does LPG need a chimney or flue?
Yes — an LPG boiler is flued in the same way as a mains gas boiler.
