Cylinder stats, zone valves and Boiler Plus compliance
Plenty of Somerset homes still run heating and hot water off a single circuit with no cylinder stat, so the boiler heats water it doesn't need to. Adding proper zoning is one of the least glamorous and most effective upgrades available.
What Boiler Plus expects
Since 2018 a new gas boiler install must include time and temperature control, plus one additional efficiency measure on combis — typically load compensation, weather compensation, flue gas heat recovery or smart controls with automation. We build that into the quote rather than leaving it as an extra.
A typical controls upgrade
- Cylinder thermostat fitted with correct set point and stored-water safety
- Separate heating and hot-water zones through motorised valves
- Programmable room stat or smart control with genuine scheduling
- Wiring centre tidied and labelled so future faults are traceable
Frequently asked
- Will this cut my bills?
- Where a system currently heats the cylinder every time the heating runs, the saving is real and immediate. On an already-zoned system the gain is smaller.
- Do I need smart controls?
- Not necessarily. A good programmable stat used properly beats a smart stat left on a default schedule.
- Can this be done without a new boiler?
- Yes — most controls upgrades are done on existing boilers in a day.
Cheapest efficiency work available
Controls work costs a fraction of a boiler replacement and often delivers a noticeable share of the comfort improvement people expect from one.
