You can smell gas — what to do right now
If you can smell gas, this page is not the first thing you should be doing. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately — it's free, staffed 24 hours, and they will attend.
Immediate steps
Turn the gas off at the emergency control valve by the meter, open doors and windows, don't operate electrical switches or anything that could spark, put out naked flames, and leave the property if the smell is strong. The emergency service makes the situation safe and caps the supply; they do not repair your appliance.
What happens after the emergency call
- Emergency service isolates and makes safe, leaving a warning notice
- A Gas Safe registered engineer repairs the appliance or pipework
- Tightness test carried out and recorded before the supply is restored
- Any at-risk or immediately-dangerous notice explained to you in writing

- No. Call 0800 111 999 first, always. Call us afterwards to carry out the repair and restore the appliance.
- Can you lift a warning notice?
- A Gas Safe engineer can rectify the fault and return the appliance to service once it passes testing.
- What if it's a faint smell near the boiler only?
- Still call the emergency line. A weak persistent smell is not something to monitor and see.
