Standing-pilot boilers were phased out in favour of electronic ignition, but plenty are still in service across Somerset. When the pilot won't stay lit it's almost always a thermocouple — cheap, quick, and one of the last easy fixes on an ageing unit.

Why it usually isn't 'just a light'
A dying thermocouple is the symptom. The real question is whether the boiler is worth keeping — Building Regs would require a condensing swap for a full replacement, but a targeted repair can buy a season or two of service.
