Boiler short cycling: firing on and off every few minutes
A boiler that fires for two minutes, stops, and fires again is short cycling. It is not a lockout, so it gets tolerated for years while it quietly wastes fuel and shortens component life.

Key points on short cycling
- Oversizing is the most common underlying cause in UK homes
- Leaving one radiator without a TRV protects the bypass path
- Weather compensation smooths cycling on modern condensing boilers
- Cycling wears the fan, valve and igniter fastest
- Correct heat loss calculation at quote stage prevents it
Relevant registrations

How we read short cycling on site
The classic cause is an oversized boiler serving a small heat load, so the appliance reaches target temperature faster than the system can absorb heat. Poor circulation, closed thermostatic valves throughout the house, and an absent or blocked bypass produce the same behaviour. Load compensation, weather compensation and correct sizing on replacement solve it properly.
Where we deal with this
How this plays out across our coverage area
When we quote a replacement we calculate the heat loss rather than matching the old appliance's output. Plenty of Somerset homes have a 30kW combi where 24kW suits the property, which is exactly how cycling becomes permanent.
Need help with short cycling?
In practice: Cycling is a sizing and controls problem. Fix the load path before considering new hardware.
For gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer; for oil work, use an OFTEC-registered technician.
Questions we get asked
- Is short cycling dangerous?
- Not dangerous, but it costs money in fuel and premature part failure.
- Can controls fix it without a new boiler?
- Often, yes. Load or weather compensation and correct bypass setup make a big difference.
