Grant Vortex lockout: what the red reset button is telling you
The burner control box on a Vortex locks out when the photocell does not see a flame within the safety window. Pressing reset once is reasonable; pressing it repeatedly floods the combustion chamber with unburnt kerosene.
What is actually going on with a Grant Vortex lockout
The OFTEC diagnostic order is fuel first: tank level, tank valve, filter, fire valve and de-aerator. Then the burner: nozzle condition and size, electrode gap, pump pressure measured on a gauge, and photocell cleanliness. Soot on the photocell lens is one of the most common single causes and is dealt with routinely during a service.

- Can I change the nozzle myself?
- Oil burner work is OFTEC-registered territory. Nozzle size and pump pressure must match the appliance data plate.
- Why does it lock out only in winter?
- Cold kerosene waxes and tank condensation increases, so marginal filters and de-aerators fail when it is coldest.
- Can I clean the photocell myself?
- No. It means opening the burner housing, and a smeared or wrongly seated photocell will fail to see a flame that is actually burning — OFTEC-registered work only.
- Could the control box itself be at fault?
- It can be, but it is checked last. Fuel supply, nozzle, electrode gap, pump pressure and photocell are all proven first, because they account for most Vortex lockouts.
