Heating installation in new-build homes

A new-build project gives far more freedom over boiler position, flue route and pipe layout than a retrofit into an existing house, since everything can be planned before walls are finished. That freedom still needs a proper heat loss calculation behind it.

Where a new-build installation usually comes from

Even with modern insulation standards, boiler and radiator or underfloor heating sizing is based on the specific building's heat loss, glazing and orientation, not a generic assumption for new-build performance. Coordinating the heating installation with other trades — plastering, flooring and kitchen fitting — matters more on a new build, since pipework and flue routes are usually installed before those finishes go in.

Things worth knowing about a new-build installation

  • Heat loss calculations still apply even with modern insulation standards
  • Boiler position and flue route can be planned into the build from the outset
  • Underfloor heating is common in new builds and needs early pipe installation
  • Coordination with other trades matters more than in a retrofit
  • Building regulations compliance and commissioning documentation apply as standard

Sorted quickly: a new-build installation

Our advice: New builds offer real flexibility in heating design, but sizing is still based on a proper heat loss calculation for that specific building.

For gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer; for oil work, use an OFTEC-registered technician.

Questions we get asked

Can heating be planned before the walls are finished?
Yes, and it usually should be — pipe and flue routes are far easier to install before plastering and flooring are complete.
Does a new build still need a full heat loss calculation?
Yes — good insulation reduces heat loss but doesn't remove the need to size the system correctly for the specific building.
