Oil boiler smoking or smelling of kerosene: stop and read this
Visible smoke or a persistent kerosene smell indoors is not something to monitor for a few days. Switch the boiler off at the isolation switch, close the fire valve if you can reach it safely, ventilate, and call an OFTEC engineer.

What is actually going on with a smoking oil boiler
Smoke means the burner is not achieving clean combustion — a worn nozzle, wrong pump pressure, restricted air, or a partially blocked flue or baffles. A kerosene smell without smoke often traces to a weeping fuel line joint, a failing filter bowl seal or a tank vent issue. Both are diagnosed with a combustion analyser and a smoke test, not by eye.
What matters most with a smoking oil boiler
- Turn the appliance off before investigating anything
- Soot inside the casing indicates sustained poor combustion
- Blocked baffles cut efficiency long before they cause smoke
- Fuel line joints weep slowly and stain the tank base
- Combustion analysis proves the appliance is right afterwards

Questions we get asked
- Is oil smell dangerous?
- Kerosene fumes are an irritant and a fire risk in quantity, and the smell usually indicates a fault that will worsen.
- Can it be serviced back to health?
- Frequently, yes — nozzle, filter, baffle clean and a combustion set-up restore most appliances that are otherwise sound.
