Worcester E9 overheat fault: why the boiler cut out hot
An E9 tells you the primary water got hotter than the overheat thermostat allows. Nine times out of ten that is a circulation problem, not a broken boiler.

Where an E9 overheat lockout usually comes from
Heat has to leave the heat exchanger as fast as the burner puts it in. If the pump is weak, the system is full of magnetite sludge, a zone valve has failed shut, or the automatic bypass is not opening, the water boils locally and the overheat stat trips. Sensor faults and scaled plate heat exchangers produce the same code, so an engineer measures flow and return differential before condemning anything.
