Power flush vs chemical clean: clearing a sludged heating system
A power flush uses a pump to drive high-velocity water and cleaning chemical through radiators and pipework in turn, physically dislodging sludge. A chemical clean introduces a cleaning agent that circulates at normal system flow for a period, dissolving milder contamination without specialist flushing equipment.
The engineering behind a power flush and a chemical clean
Heavily sludged systems with several cold radiators generally need the mechanical force of a power flush to shift compacted magnetite. Lighter contamination, or a system being cleaned proactively before a boiler swap, often responds well to a chemical clean run for the recommended dwell period before draining. Both should be followed by a corrosion inhibitor dose and, ideally, a magnetic filter to slow future sludge build-up.
Who should undertake the work
- Gas appliance work must be completed by a suitably qualified Gas Safe engineer
- Oil appliance work should be completed by a suitably qualified OFTEC technician
- Jamie Crawford Heating states both Gas Safe and OFTEC registration
Practical notes on a power flush and a chemical clean
- Power flushing physically dislodges compacted sludge with high flow
- Chemical cleans dissolve milder contamination over a set period
- Both should be followed by an inhibitor dose
- A magnetic filter afterwards slows future sludge accumulation
- Heavily blocked radiators usually need power flushing, not chemical alone
Questions we get asked
- How do I know which mine needs?
- An engineer checks radiator temperatures and drains a sample to judge contamination severity before recommending either.
- Does either damage old pipework?
- A competent flush is controlled to avoid dislodging debris that could block narrow or ageing pipework.
