Efficiency fault

Boiler short cycling — firing and stopping every few minutes

Short cycling is when a boiler reaches temperature almost immediately, shuts down, then restarts minutes later. It burns more fuel than steady operation and puts thousands of extra ignition cycles a year through the same components.

For: Homeowners with high bills and a noisy boiler
Boiler flow and return pipework with a magnetic system filter fitted

The three usual causes

First, oversizing: a 30kW combi on a small flat with radiators that can only dissipate 8kW will always cycle. Second, restricted flow from sludge, a closed valve or a seized pump. Third, control strategy — a boiler running flat-out at 80°C with no modulation or weather compensation. We measure flow and return temperatures before deciding which applies.

What improves it

  • Correct heat-curve or flow-temperature setting for the radiator output
  • Radiator balancing so the return temperature drops properly
  • System cleanse plus filter where iron oxide is restricting flow
  • Load or weather compensation controls where the boiler supports them

Frequently asked

Is short cycling dangerous?
Not in itself — it's an efficiency and longevity problem rather than a safety one. It does shorten the life of the fan, ignition and heat exchanger.
Do I need a smaller boiler?
Often not. A correctly set flow temperature and balanced radiators fix most cases without replacing the appliance.
Will turning the flow temperature down leave me cold?
In a well-balanced system, no. Rooms take slightly longer to reach temperature but hold it more steadily, and condensing efficiency improves.

Worth doing before you replace

Cycling is one of the few heating faults where a couple of hours of setup work can pay for itself in a season. We'll tell you honestly whether tuning is enough or the boiler is genuinely mismatched to the house.
