Water drawn through Mendip limestone carries dissolved calcium that deposits as scale wherever it's heated. In combi boilers that means the domestic plate exchanger; in cylinders it means the coil and immersion.
Where scale actually costs you
A millimetre of scale on a heat transfer surface measurably reduces output and forces longer burner runs for the same hot water. The visible symptoms — kettling, weakening shower flow, erratic temperature — arrive long after the efficiency loss starts. Protection is cheap; a replacement exchanger is not.
