Humming or vibrating pump: noise diagnosis on a heating system
Pumps should be nearly silent. A hum you can hear through a wall, a rhythmic vibration or a gravelly rattle each has a different cause and a different fix.

What is actually going on with a noisy pump
Continuous hum with poor output suggests worn bearings. A gritty rattle suggests debris in the impeller. A hissing, boiling sound is cavitation, usually from insufficient system pressure or a restriction on the suction side. Vibration transmitted into joinery is often just rigid mounting, cured with proper isolation rather than a new pump.
Scope of work
- Domestic boiler installation
- Boiler servicing
- Boiler maintenance and repair
Detail that affects your quote for a noisy pump
- Cavitation needs pressure and restriction checked, not a new pump
- Debris rattle points to a system that needs flushing and a filter
- Rigid pipe clips transmit normal pump noise into the fabric
- Speed settings that are too high make noise without benefit
- Old gravity-converted systems often run pumps too fast
Questions we get asked
- Can I just turn the pump speed down?
- Sometimes, if the system still circulates properly. It should be checked rather than guessed at.
- Does a noisy pump mean it is about to fail?
- Bearing noise usually does. Debris and mounting noise do not.
