Cylinder immersion heater faults and when to use one as backup
Most stored hot water cylinders have an electric immersion element as backup, letting you heat water even if the boiler itself is out of action. When that element fails, hot water stops entirely on that circuit.
An immersion heater fault: the short technical version
The element itself can burn out after years of scale build-up in hard-water areas, insulating the heating coil and causing it to overheat and fail. A tripped circuit breaker, a failed thermostat that never calls for heat, or a stuck cut-out are the next things checked before condemning the element itself, since all three present as simply cold water with no obvious cause.
