Radiator balancing: why an even-heating house needs it
Balancing is the process of restricting flow to radiators nearest the boiler so the ones further round the loop still get their fair share. Without it, water takes the path of least resistance.
The engineering behind radiator balancing
Each radiator has two valves: the thermostatic or manual valve you adjust for temperature, and the lockshield, which sets how much water it is allowed through relative to the rest of the system. Balancing measures the temperature drop across each radiator with the system running flat out and nudges lockshields until every radiator gets roughly the same drop, typically around 10 to 12°C.
What matters most with radiator balancing
- Balancing is normally done once and rarely needs repeating
- It should follow any radiator addition, removal or pipework change
- A clip-on thermometer on flow and return pipes makes it measurable
- Unbalanced systems waste energy heating the nearest rooms twice
- TRVs control temperature; lockshields control flow share

Need help with radiator balancing?
The honest position: A properly balanced system reaches temperature evenly and often lets you turn the boiler flow temperature down, which saves fuel across the whole heating season.
For gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer; for oil work, use an OFTEC-registered technician.

Questions we get asked
- How do I know my system needs balancing?
- If rooms furthest from the boiler are consistently cooler despite fully open valves, the flow is not being shared evenly.
- Can balancing be done without draining the system?
- Yes, it is done live with the heating running and is one of the quicker jobs an engineer will carry out during a visit.
