Gas boiler testing

The gas rate check: confirming a boiler is burning the right amount of fuel

A gas rate check measures how much gas a boiler actually consumes while running and compares it against the manufacturer's rated input for that model.

Written for: Homeowners wanting to understand a technical service check
Engineer reading a gas meter dial to calculate gas rate

What we check first with the gas rate check

The engineer times the gas meter's dial movement while the boiler runs at full output, uses that timing together with the meter's calorific value data to calculate an actual consumption figure, then compares it to the appliance data plate. A rate significantly below specification suggests restricted gas flow or an undersized supply; a rate above specification can mean an incorrectly adjusted valve, and either affects safe, efficient operation.

Practical notes on the gas rate check

  • Measured against the manufacturer's rated input on the data plate
  • Calculated by timing gas meter consumption at full output
  • A low rate can point to restricted flow or supply issues
  • A high rate can point to an incorrectly adjusted gas valve
  • Part of the checks after any gas valve work or new installation

Where we deal with this

Scope of work

  • Domestic boiler installation
  • Boiler servicing
  • Boiler maintenance and repair

Need help with the gas rate check?

The honest position: The gas rate check confirms a boiler is consuming fuel exactly as the manufacturer intended, not more and not less.

For gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer; for oil work, use an OFTEC-registered technician.

Questions we get asked

Is a gas rate check done at every service?
It is a standard part of thorough servicing, particularly after any work to the gas valve or supply pipework.
What happens if the rate is wrong?
The cause is investigated — commonly the valve setting or the supply pipework — and corrected before the appliance is left running.
