Oil burner lockout

Grant Vortex burner lockout: what the reset button is telling you

The Vortex burner locks out when its control box fails to detect a flame within the timed sequence after oil ignition begins. It is a protective response, not a random fault, and it deserves a proper check rather than repeated resetting.

A Grant Vortex burner lockout explained in plain terms

A worn or partially blocked nozzle atomises oil poorly and can prevent reliable ignition even with good supply pressure. A dirty or faulty photocell fails to register a flame that is actually present, which produces an identical lockout from a completely different cause. Low oil level, air in the supply line after a delivery, and a failing pump coupling are checked in sequence before the control box itself is suspected.

Things worth knowing about a Grant Vortex burner lockout

  • Reset the lockout button once and observe the ignition attempt
  • A blocked or worn nozzle atomises poorly and disrupts ignition
  • A dirty photocell can fail to see a flame that is actually burning
  • Air in the line after an oil delivery causes short-term misfires
  • The control box is checked last, after supply and burner parts

Questions we get asked

Can I clean the photocell myself?
This involves opening the burner housing and should be done by an OFTEC-registered engineer.
Should I reset more than once?
Two attempts is the limit — repeated resets on an unproven flame risk unburnt oil accumulating in the combustion chamber.
