Oil supply components

Oil supply lines and Tigerloop devices: keeping air out of the fuel line

Oil is drawn from the tank to the burner under suction on most domestic installs, and any tiny air leak along that run — a loose fitting, a worn line, or a low tank — introduces air bubbles that upset combustion at the nozzle.

A Tigerloop de-aeration device: engineer's shortlist

  • Air in the oil line causes erratic firing, noise or ignition failure
  • A Tigerloop continuously separates air rather than needing manual bleeding
  • Long or below-burner-level supply runs benefit from one most
  • Fitting a de-aerator can convert a two-pipe system to effectively one-pipe
  • Genuine oil leaks at fittings still need finding and fixing separately

Where a Tigerloop de-aeration device usually comes from

A Tigerloop sits in the supply line close to the burner and uses a small internal reservoir to separate air from oil before the fuel pump draws it through, effectively self-bleeding the line continuously rather than relying on the installer getting every joint perfectly airtight. It is particularly valuable on long supply runs, tanks positioned below the burner, or older two-pipe systems being converted or repaired.

Where we deal with this

Straight answers on a Tigerloop de-aeration device

Our advice: A de-aeration device is a relatively low-cost addition that solves a surprisingly common source of unreliable oil boiler firing.

For gas work, use a Gas Safe registered engineer; for oil work, use an OFTEC-registered technician.

Questions we get asked

Does a Tigerloop fix a genuine oil leak?
No — it manages air already in the line but does not stop oil escaping from a leaking joint, which still needs repairing directly.
Is fitting one worth it on an older system?
Often yes, especially where nuisance lockouts or noisy burner start-up have been a recurring problem.
