Fan fault

Worcester C6 fault: fan speed not reaching target

Before the burner lights, the fan must prove it can move the right volume of air. C6 says it did not, and the boiler will not attempt ignition until it does.

Detail that affects your quote for a C6 fan fault

  • A whining or grinding fan usually precedes the fault by weeks
  • Water tracking down a flue corrodes fan connections
  • Sagging horizontal flues restrict airflow and load the fan
  • Fan replacement includes checking the flue seal and fall
  • Combustion is re-checked with an analyser after a fan change

Where a C6 fan fault usually comes from

Worn fan bearings produce a rising whine before the fault appears, so noise history matters. Loose or corroded fan plugs, damaged harnesses and water ingress from a poorly sealed flue give intermittent C6s that come and go with weather. A restricted or sagging flue also loads the fan and drags speed below target.

Scope of work

  • Domestic boiler installation
  • Boiler servicing
  • Boiler maintenance and repair

Where we deal with this

Questions we get asked

Can I run the boiler with a noisy fan?
You can, but the fault will arrive at an inconvenient time. Fan noise is a planned repair, not an emergency.
Is a fan an expensive part?
It is a mid-priced component and on most Greenstar models it is a straightforward same-visit swap.
