Smoke from an oil boiler flue: colour, timing and what to do
A brief puff of white or grey vapour on a cold morning start-up is usually just condensation in the flue and nothing to worry about. Persistent black or dark grey smoke, or smoke that continues once the boiler is running normally, is a different matter entirely and should not be ignored.
How we read smoke from an oil flue on site
Black smoke generally means the fuel-to-air ratio is wrong, most often from a failing nozzle or an incorrectly set air shutter, and it leaves soot deposits that are visible around the terminal itself over time. Continuing to run a boiler producing black smoke wastes fuel and risks a chimney or flue fire from accumulated deposits. If smoke persists beyond the first minute of a cold start, the boiler should be switched off and an OFTEC engineer booked.
