Barn conversions almost never have the same heating brief as the original house. Volume, glazing ratio, and mixed-material walls change the heat-loss calculation completely — and a like-for-like boiler upsize is rarely the right answer.

Underfloor is usually the right call
Big open volumes love the even, low-flow-temperature output of underfloor heating. That in turn suits a modern condensing boiler running at 45–50°C flow, or later, an air-source heat pump. We plumb it so both work today and tomorrow.

Future-proofing for a heat pump

- Should I use underfloor everywhere?
- Usually yes for ground floor, radiators upstairs — best of both. First-floor underfloor is doable in a new build but rarely justifies the cost in a conversion.
- What fuel makes sense?
- If mains gas is nearby, that. If not, LPG or oil with a heat-pump-ready system for later. We'll model both on the survey.
- Who coordinates with the builder?
- We do — first-fix, second-fix and commissioning slot into the build programme without you playing project manager.
