S-plan vs Y-plan wiring: what the difference means for faults
S-plan and Y-plan are the two common ways of wiring a boiler, cylinder and zone valves together, and the choice affects whether heating and hot water can ever run truly independently of each other.
How we read S-plan and Y-plan wiring layouts on site
S-plan wires each zone to its own two-port valve, so heating and hot water genuinely operate independently — you can have one on without the other. Y-plan shares a single three-port valve between both zones, which is simpler to wire and install but means the two functions are always linked through that one valve's mid-position. Neither is inherently better; the choice usually reflects when the system was installed and what the original installer specified.
