For a gas appliance this means isolating and, where the supply is not continuing to another appliance, capping the gas pipework so it cannot be inadvertently turned back on. For oil, the supply line is disconnected and the tank addressed separately if it is also being removed. The system pipework is drained or made safe, and the old unit is removed for recycling in line with waste regulations rather than simply left in place or discarded informally.
