Fuel comparison

Oil vs gas boilers: the practical differences off the mains grid

Where mains gas reaches a property it is usually the simpler fuel to manage, with no tank or deliveries to think about. Off the gas grid, oil remains a well-proven and widely serviced choice.

Oil and gas boilers explained in plain terms

Gas boilers connect to continuous underground supply and need no on-site storage. Oil boilers draw from a tank that has to be sited, bunded where required, and monitored for level, with deliveries planned ahead of cold snaps. Both fuel types are serviced annually by a qualified engineer — Gas Safe for gas, OFTEC for oil — and modern condensing versions of each achieve similar efficiency.

Things worth knowing about oil and gas boilers

  • Gas needs no on-site fuel storage; oil needs a tank
  • Oil deliveries should be ordered before the tank runs low
  • Both fuels support condensing boiler technology
  • Gas Safe covers gas work; OFTEC covers oil work
  • Oil tanks require a bund or safe distance from boundaries and buildings

How this plays out across our coverage area

Much of our rural coverage around the Mendips has no mains gas at all, so the real comparison locally is oil against LPG or electric rather than oil against gas. Where a gas main genuinely reaches the boundary, connection costs are usually the deciding factor rather than running costs alone.

Questions we get asked

Is oil less reliable than gas?
Not in itself — reliability depends more on tank management and boiler servicing than on the fuel type.
Can an oil boiler be swapped for gas later?
Only if a gas main is brought to the property; otherwise the practical alternatives are LPG or electric.

The honest position: Where a gas main exists, it usually wins on convenience. Where it does not, a well-maintained oil boiler is a legitimate long-term choice.
